Environmental life cycle comparison of 4 MBT scenarios

This project deals with the environmental comparison through an LCA of 4 different MBT strategies. Two indicators were analyzed: energy and greenhouse gas balances.

Key parameters and local site-specific conditions influencing the environmental analysis were identified. Secondary results included: 1) the major influence of biogas recovery characteristics (biochemical methane potential value, capture rate, recovery rate); 2) for MBT options: the influence of the stability objective for MSW in the MBT treatment plant and of transport distances to ultimate disposal of incineration residues; and; 3) the influence of nitrous oxide production in the biofilter used for air treatment in the MBT scenarios. This study showed that when one considers the variety of site & technical specificities, then one cannot draw a definitive conclusion as to whether or not MBT is the best strategy. Environmental improvement levers can be underlined for future work and improvement of each alternative. From this conclusion it can be drawn that each specific context should be precisely identified to be able to make an environmentally-sound decision.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
