A project is being carried out to establish and validate tools which can be used to predict and possibly also influence (reduce) the duration of the aftercare period for modern landfills and to estimate the associated costs.
The tools considered include both of modelling capabilities and technologies based on adjusted landfill design and operation as well as pretreatment of waste. The activities include sampling and laboratory characterisation of shredder waste and mixed waste, large scale lysimeter tests, collection of leachate time series data from several landfills, review and validation of leachate development models, and testing of methods to reduce the aftercare period at landfills for shredder waste and mixed waste. The project is in the initial stages, and this paper presents and discusses some of the initial results of the project.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
