AEROBIC STABILIZATION OF TANNERY SLUDGE MIXED WITH COMPOST

The wastewater coming from a tannery activity is often treated by biological process with activated sludge. The sludge from the wastewater treatment plant is still a waste to treat and dispose off. The sludges have a high content of organic matter, like the sludge from an urban wastewater treatment plant, a high content of chlorides, sulphates and heavy metals, mainly Crome which is largely used in tanning processes. The tannery sludges are currently a big ecological and environmental problem in Europe and in Italy, too. The production in Italy is around 280.000 tons every year. No process carried out up to now, has been successful for a reuse of the sludge and the only possible destination remains the landfill.

The wastewater coming from a tannery activity is often treated by biological treatment; the sludge produced by these processes are largely disposed off in landfill. The tannery sludge is currently a big ecological and environmental problem because of its high content of heavy metals, mainly Chrome. The research work presents the possibility of an aerobic stabilization of tannery sludge mixed with compost. The results show an initial phase of fast increasing of temperature due to a high bacterial activity. This high activity decreases quite soon and it becomes stabilized at mesophilic conditions. The final conditions of the sludge show a reduction of water content, a reduction of Total Volatile Solids (TVS) and an improvement of biological stability.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
