The end of life phase of motors within environmental product declaration (EPD)

Motors account for a 65% of energy use in EU (De Keuleunaer, H. et.al., 2004) because of their manifold applications which range from household applications up to 1 kW to industrial application with 200 kW and more. Different studies on consumption characterization of motor driven systems have shown large potentials for electricity savings up to 181 billion kWh/year in Europe (EU 15) (De Keuleunaer, H. et.al., 2004). Ecodesign activities as well as the usage of "energy using products" (EuP) in an environmentally friendly manner can contribute to the reduction of energy consumption and to the achievement of greenhouse gas emission targets. The European EuP directive seeks to inform consumers about environmental characteristics and performance along product life cycle. Environmental product declarations (EPD) compile this information in an user friendly way. Since motors belong to the energy using products, several software tools have been developed to generate specified EPD. The different software tools calculate the life cycle phases including the end of life phase with different assumptions which prevents direct comparisons of the results.

Like all public international law treaties, the Paris Climate Accords rely on national law for their implementation. The success of the agreement therefore depends, to a large extent, on the stepstaken or not taken by national governments and legislators as well as on the instruments and mechanisms chosen for this task. Against this background, the present article compares different approaches to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, using court decisions as a means to assess their (legal) effectiveness.
